Yelp Mad Scientist Soiree
There are some parties I attend and just think “This kinda thing can only happen in London”. One such event was community website Yelp’s Mad Scientist Soiree at the Strongroom in Shoreditch- utterly utterly bonkers.
The premise is that 40 of London’s weirdest, wackiest, and downright tastiest food and drinks brands showcase their most science fiction-like products to the lab coat wearing Yelp community in attendance. And the Yelpers came out in force donning their best Einstein wigs and thick lens glasses while rehearsing their finest evil cackles. As well as taking pictures of the best dressed on the evening, I managed to try some fantastic food and drink; my favourites being alcoholic sweets by Smith & Sinclair, exploding cocktails by Mr Bubble, and liquid nitrogen ice cream by Whipsmiths!
So what is this Yelp Community? If you’ve ever checked out reviews of your local restaurant / bar / cinema etc, the likelihood is you’ve probably stumbled across Yelp near the top of a Google search. Reviews can be written by anyone who registers on the site or app, and by doing so, you automatically become part of the community. Every once in a while to say thanks to members (or Yelpers), the team put on themed parties with the best part being that it’s all free.
Having attended a few Yelp events in the past, it really does feel like a community from yesteryear when you’d know all your neighbours on a first name basis and invite then round for tea. Where else can I say that I’ve bonded with fellow Londoners over gin & tonic flavoured fruit pastilles and oyster flavoured crisps?
If you’re the type to always be on the look out to meet new people, try something a bit out of the ordinary, or even dress up as an alien / ninja / David Hasselhoff, Yelp London is the place to do it.
The next big event is a Charity Micro Pig pop up taking place 19-21st June, sign up HERE to join the community and become a Yelper.
