WTF Why Not Pop Up, Hackney Downs
The last time I tried Tongue ‘n’ Cheek was at their stint at The Joker of Penton St in Islington and I loved it; the signature ox heart burger and Philly cheese steak sandwich are things of beauty. The team has now set up a three week December residency in association with Square Root, an East London soda factory, and we got an exclusive first look last week.
The pop up is housed within the grounds of the Square Root factory just a stone’s throw from Hackney Downs train station and runs from 5th-21st December every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. As well as Tongue n’ Cheek food, guests can also enjoy bespoke cocktails made with Square Root soda including Gin and Tonic, Christmas cocktails, and an utterly delicious cola.
To the all-important food menu, expect the heart burger to feature, and there is also a gorgeous Belly Connection burger that also includes pork belly, gorgonzola, red onions, and pimiento mayo. If burgers aren’t your thing then there is lamb in rosemary sauce, spaghetti carbonara, and choux dumplings.
However my personal favourites were the pork belly with fennel and orange salad and the spaghetti al pomodoro. The pork is tender, juicy, and works ever so well with the apple balsamic marinade. Likewise the spaghetti is brilliant, and Tongue ‘n’ Cheek owner Cristiano is very proud of his creation, with good reason. The best possible ingredients have been sourced, including tomatoes and durum wheat pasta from Puglia, and olive oil from Crete. If you try just one dish, then this is the one. Be warned though, the pasta is only cooked al dente, and requests for further cooking will be swiftly refused.
So with all this win, WTF why not give it a try? As an excuse to arrive early on the weekend, there is an additional brunch menu that includes pancakes, bacon, and BLT sandwiches. No pop up has ever been more aptly named!
Open Friday 4pm-10pm, Saturday 10am-10pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm until 21st December
