Wingmans @ Bread St Kitchen
Gordon Ramsay’s Bread St Kitchen haunt has recently set out to partner up with London street food purveyors, giving them a bone fide home in which they can feed Londoners and perfect their craft.
First stepping up to the mark is Wingmans – which aims to bring true New York flavour to a British chicken wing – and it’s testament to the lads themselves that they’ve taken this leap, from festival food favourite to fine-dining locale, in their stride.
You’ll find the three men behind Wingmans (I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere) on the dimly-lit lower floor where grub is reserved for bar-goers only. Ruthlessly scouring chicken suppliers for the plumpest, meatiest wings has sure paid off, and you can almost taste how happy these chicks were before matters got the better of them. Further to that, the wings have been dressed up in what can only be described as their glad rags thanks to the ‘man.
Buttermilk batter is the base for lashings of homemade Buffalo sauce, Oriental sauce, Signature Hot sauce (not so hot) and Sweet and Smokey BBQ sauce – you decide. We certainly had no regrets with our Honey Sriracha doused wings which brought out a bit of a sweat. The changeable, Limited Edition, Wing of the Week was on holiday when we visited but the standard of the rest of the fare means we’ll definitely be returning for them.
Though specialising in gluten-free, saucy wings (served in five-piece portions), sides are available. The deep fried Truffle Mac and Cheese balls (served in threes) got our attention and earned our admiration.
Dessert is actually worth leaving room for: a Salted Caramel Chocolate Brownie (no rolling your eyes in the back). This little (agreeably it is quite slim, but then so too do you want to be) slice of gooey goodness packs in not only Reece’s pieces for extra flavour but a dense, moist filling far superior to the dusty, dry, cocoa infused slabs that are dessert stalwarts these days.
Like most things in life, a Wingman makes everything better, and these guys are only available at Bread Street Kitchen on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6pm until the end of February, so get there sharpish!
