Beer & Cocktails

There are cocktail drinkers and there are ale drinkers.  The two don’t often mix which can cause issues when you’ve got the type of friends that see a cocktail as a drink exclusive to females and male hairdressers.  You could compromise by going to your local Weatherspoon’s, but the ale is anything but craft and the cocktails taste like they’ve been filtered through a toilet cistern.  Bethnal Green’s newest pub The Sun Tavern attempts to solve this age old problem by offering all the qualities of a modern British pub but also make killer cocktails to boot.

Based on Bethnal Green Road, The Sun Tavern is the new venture from the team behind the hugely successful Discount Suit Company cocktail bar and has gone for the shabby chic look.  Expect exposed brickwork, worn leather bar stools, and if you’re lucky, the toilets may even have loo roll in them. But don’t let that put you off though; the drinks are so good that you’ll ignore all the lack of luxuries.

Barn Owl Cocktail

The cocktail list is small but offer something for most tastes; we tried a couple of the specialities including the too easy to drink Peach Fuzz that comes in a Viking style tankard, and a potent concoction of cognac, rum, and rye whisky named the 12 Mile Limit.  To satisfy the anti-cocktail brigade, there’s a healthy list of craft beer, ales, and beer served in tankards, making it possible to order a cheeky tankard cocktail and your friends will be none the wiser.  A great local for those looking for a choice of drinks.
