The Grill from Ipanema, Covent Garden
So, summer is here and you’ve not booked a getaway. You can a) book to go somewhere with white sand beaches at great expense because you’ve left it so late, or b) just head down to Covent Garden beach? No I’ve not lost my marbles (some may say I never had them to begin with); but the folks from London based Brazilian BBQ restaurant Cabana have set up a beach in the middle of Covent Garden Piazza complete with sand, deck chairs, and a barbeque.
It was a bizarre sensation to find myself in the middle of London’s tourist mecca on a scorching Wednesday evening to suddenly be confronted by pumping tunes, the smell of grilled meat, and Caipirinha cocktails coming out thick and fast from a makeshift beach hut. The pop up entitled The Grill from Ipanema offers a selection of Cabana’s most popular dishes, including spicy malagueta chicken, toasted corn nuts and sweet potato fries. Behind the bar you’ll also find plenty of Brazilian inspired cachaca cocktails. Then head to the mini beach (aka a sand pit), kick off your shoes, and feel the sand between your toes. There is even a stall run by Ipanema to buy flip flops and beach bags.
The Grill from Ipanema pop up beach is only around until Sunday 13th July, so make haste. The West End has never felt so close to Rio.
