Sky High Yoga at Sky Garden
With the blossoming trend of ‘yoga with a view’ continuing to sweep across London, we checked out Sky Garden’s Sky High Yoga to see if achieving zen to a breathtaking city landscape was worth the 6.30am start (groan).
Running on Wednesdays and Thursdays until mid September, the sessions are held by Flex London’s Issy Scobie, and are surprisingly cheap at just £10 a pop; much more reasonable than any of its competitors. Nestled amongst Sky Garden’s famed tropical greenery, yogis can salute the sun as it rises behind the Gherkin and other London landmarks and end the session with a complimentary Love Taste smoothie.
On paper it sounds like the sort of way Victoria Secret models start their day, and the perfect place and time to start toning up without having to compromise your precious evenings. In reality, having to get up at 5.30am and catch the first bus or train to the Walkie Talkie building in the city is a little less inviting (we may or may not have succumbed to the temptation of an Uber to allow for an extra 15 mins of shut eye).
The first thing that will strike you as you travel up to the 35th floor is how many other Londoners have also managed to drag themselves out of bed; there were almost a hundred people at the second session, which pays tribute to how overwhelmingly popular these classes are. The terrace may be roomy, but it was a little cosy once everyone was packed in; yoga mats mere centimetres from each other and the yoga instructor wired up to a mic to be heard.
Although the sessions are mixed ability and Issy throughout the classes recommends easier poses for newcomers, it became clear that this is a place to see and be seen in the amateur yoga world, and more suited to those with a little more experience, stamina and knowledge. If this sounds like you, book your session, before the rest of the London yogis snap up a coveted spot.
