Reebok Sports Club and Re:Spa, Canary Wharf

This review was originally meant to be part of a ‘best spa days for couples’ round-up, but as I started my research into the Reebok Sports Club and realised it was the largest premium health club in Europe, I decided it deserved a piece of its own. I’m not the sportiest girl and I don’t have a gym membership, mostly because I don’t get that great feeling after a workout that people go on about. However, as with most things, it’s a totally different story if you’re prepared to pay the price tag that comes with luxury.

Following a £6 million pound refurbishment The Reebok Sports Club in Canary Wharf sets the bar for premium gyms and is unrivalled in the country when it comes to facilities and state of the art equipment. With 100,000 square feet of fitness I can’t go into every one of their offerings but I can assure you, it’s all you could hope for and then some. Not many sports centres out there are home to a golf lab, climbing wall, boxing ring, a TRX suspension area (the method of bodyweight training designed by the US Navy Seals) and a Powerplate studio, on top of all the standard gym & spa services, the country’s largest free weight section and Europe’s biggest spin studio.

You could argue that it’s not all about size and quantity but about quality and you’d be right, but the Reebok Sports Club excels in this too with top trainers within each discipline such as bodybuilding champion and fitness model Ulisses and internationally recognised Pilates guru Alan Herdman. What really impressed me though was the attention to detail, which sets it apart from the vast majority of its competitors. I always avoid showering at the gym because (unsurprisingly) I can’t go without my beloved beauty products, but the changing rooms at the Reebok club are so well equipped that I was actually excited to try all they have on offer. From bespoke shampoo and conditioner, aloe vera body lotion and GHDs, to a premier dry cleaner service, the standard is that of a 5* hotel.

After taking part in an enjoyable Pop Pilates class it was time for relaxing in the Re:SPA, which has recently released a series of treatments and pampering packages especially designed to fit in with those on a tight schedule. I of course had high hopes for a spa that uses Guinot, Murad and Aromatherapy Associates products, but there’s always the issue of gym spas feeling like an extension of it. However, the atmosphere was very tranquil and I was pleased to find out that the level of expertise within the staff is also second to none. The Guinot Hydraclean facial by Naomi, which helps cleanse the skin and eliminate toxins, while leaving it hydrated and luminous, did not disappoint. 25 minutes may not sound like enough but thanks to one of the finest French skincare brands and the use of a heat machine to clean clogged pores, the results were instantly noticeable.

The Ultimate Aromatherapy Associates Body Massage is one of the salon’s hero treatments and leaves you feeling deeply relaxed and re-charged. My therapist Michelle asked me what I was hoping to get out of the treatment and chose the lovely lavender scented de-stress essential oil accordingly. She then carefully applied pressure along my back to stimulate the nervous system, used Swedish and neuromuscular techniques to relieve muscular tension and lymphatic drainage to encourage a healthy circulation. The combination of the oil, the massage techniques and the comfiest heated treatment bed, meant that by the end of it I was stress and strains free.

Here’s my verdict: if you’re looking to join a gym don’t think twice, choose the Reebok club and start enjoying getting fit. If like me, you’re not a gym bunny just yet (could be your new year’s resolution?), make sure you book a spa day experience with your partner or a friend and you’ll be offered a complimentary one week membership — you’ll make up for the Christmas indulgences and you’re sure to come out feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, not a bad way to end the year and start 2015 as you mean to go on!
