Summary: The Merchant House is a retreat for the discerning London drinker

Oozes Class

Hidden away down a narrow cobbled street just off Bow Lane in the rich surrounds of Mansion House within the square mile, you’ll find Merchant House, the newest boutique bar opened by the London Bar Consultants.  Owned by the former residents of the City of London Distillery Bar, the Merchant House is bringing the same sophisticated vibe to a new location a couple of miles down the road and is truly fantastic.

The concept of the Merchant House is based on the British Empire’s fascination with gin and rum from the 1400s through to the present day and their shared history.  Although vodka shares more DNA with gin, going back through the ages, rum has shared a special relationship with the juniper spirit which the Merchant House celebrates with a back bar that contains over 300 premium rums and gins.

Rum and Gin bar

Having visited many rum bars around the world, many follow a similar formula; Tiki mugs, Hawaiian shirts, reggae music and flaming zombies; but Merchant House flips this concept on its head by going along the sophisticated route.  The two floor venue is all hard woods, leather, and dimmed lighting, there’s even a piano player in the corner; if it wasn’t for the smoking ban the air would be smoky grey from all the cigars being puffed.

Everything about the place oozes class and the expert bartenders try their darndest to find a drink that suits your tastes.  Word of warning though, vodka is a swear word here, so whatever you do, DON’T ask for a Grey Goose and lemonade.  The drinks fall into 3 categories starting from £9 for a premium spirit and mixer.  There is also the opportunity to join The Connoisseurs’ Collective, a membership club available for £150 per year.  Benefits include invitations to exclusive events, ‘both ways drinks’ offering a nip of chosen spirit alongside your mixed drink, privilege prices on bar bottle sales and food, plus exclusive rates on event services.

Away from the noise and bustle of City life, the Merchant House is a retreat for the discerning London drinker.  A must try.
