London Cocktail Club Apothecary Cocktail Masterclass, Islington
By now you’ve surely heard of London Cocktail Club, the boozy boudoir, famed for notoriously boisterous barmen, with four popular outlets dotting the city. Having opened its youngest branch on Essex Road back in March, the creative heads of LCC most recently set themselves the challenge of making the space even more of a go-to hangout post-work.
With importance already placed on cups of freshly popped popcorn as visitors sip on TV and movie themed drinks (Harry Potter, Breaking Bad), the Islington location has been well served with the launch of its own cocktail-making masterclass.
LCC is no stranger to turning spirit novices into major mixologists, but this masterclass session tops the leader board for its special theme exclusive to the Essex Road branch.
Signing up to their £50 one-and-a-half hour cocktail lesson takes you back to the age of the apothecary – the art of blending herbal and chemical ingredients and the precursor to the modern science of chemistry. Not only will you be learning to shake those cocktails faster than you’ll shake the hangover the next day, you’ll also get a proper lesson in all that is mixology – including pairing the basic four principles of a stellar cocktail and some handy tips and tricks along the way – think banishing sugar syrup from your vocabulary for good.
Donning the mandatory safety googles and white lab coat will have you looking the part as you and your group mix ethanol… with ethanol… and maybe some more ethanol, plus a dash of citrus, something sweet and a gloved-handful of dry ice.
Stick on the electric whisk (we’re pretty sure they had those back in the day), watch the magical vapour temporarily engulf your vision and like a scene from Romeo and Juliet, you get your own vial to sip your unlisted, conjured concoction. And we promise the class won’t end in tragedy.
In fact, this apothecary themed masterclass is set to turn fans and punters into cocktail specialists to leave even connoisseurs like James Bond wanting more.
For our turn in the branch’s newly opened back room we got a 40 minute crash course that saw us and others make some of the most popular drinks in the business. But you also get to curate, make and even name your own concoctions… just brush up on your imaginative skills prior. Our group’s desperately named ‘I Like An Ostrich’ – formed from rum, soda water, lemon and strawberry liqueur – surprisingly made up in flavour what it lacked in creativity and naming ability.
When you’re finished learning from the best in the business you’ll also get a nifty little rosette to say you aced the class, as well as a fully accredited LCC diploma to back up your new found skills and a recipe book.
Finally after all that hard work and concentration you and your gang can relax in the large corner booth with the fruits of your labour.
The Apothecary Masterclass at LCC Islington requires a minimum booking of 4 people. Priced at £50 for a 1.5 hour class including drinks, a ‘Master of Mixology’ rosette and LCC cocktail recipe book.
