Ice Skating at Wembley Park

Every cloud has a silver lining, and despite the rain, constant illness, and freezing temperatures, it’s the fact that I can dust my ice skates off for another year and get down to one of London’s ever growing population of pop up ice rinks.  And the newest is right outside the iconic Wembley Stadium and is proud to be North West London’s only outdoor rink.  The rink officially opened to the public at 7pm on Friday 14th November, but we got an exclusive first look earlier in the day for a full rundown.

I’ve frequented Wembley stadium for sporting and musically spectacles but despite making the iconic walk from Wembley Park tube station on so many occasions, I had no idea that there is a shopping mall if you take a slight detour to the right of the ark.  The new rink stands outside the entrance to the London Designer Outlet and is part of a feast of entertainment taking place in the lead up to Christmas.  This includes an outdoor arts and craft market, DJ every Friday and Saturday evening, live ice sculpting, and on special occasions, the Urban Ice Crew will perform stunts on the ice for your viewing pleasure.

The 600sqm rink was officially opened by Suzanne Shaw, initially of Popstars fame, and then went on to win the third series of Dancing on Ice, but before the public got on the ice we were lucky enough to have a private skate lesson with former British Champion and Dancing on Ice teacher Robert Burgerman.  Despite stepping on the ice all Bambi legged and nervous, he patiently talked us through the basic steps to help us find our feet and gain confidence.  After about 30 minutes and an extremely wet bottom, we could hold our own on the ice and were skating round unaided.  This put us in good stead for when the public joined the ice later, and we looked like potential Dancing on Ice champions (in our heads anyway).
