Holborn Grind Coffee and Cocktail House

From the makers of Shoreditch Grind & Soho Grind comes the imaginatively named Holborn Grind, in erm, Holborn.  For those unfamiliar with the name, Grind & Co are one of London’s much loved independent coffee houses.  Shoreditch Grind gained plaudits for their unique take on the coffee shop experience, offering top quality coffee in the day alongside cocktails and music in the evening.

The new shop is based within the complex of the recently opened Hoxton Hotel on High Holborn and follows the same formula that has made the other two such successes. Frequenters to the neighbourhood may have already visited the shop as it opened its doors in September, but up until last week, was completely teetotal.  Now with a fully operational alcohol license (woohoo), we went to check out the venue.

The long narrow room has a warm, local feel to it, much like the rest of the hotel.  Although seating space is at a premium during busy periods, there are comfy sofas and bar stools throughout, so those looking with time to spare can enjoy the brand’s signature single origin house coffee blend in comfort.

Naturally, a good Espresso Martini is expected but there are 3 other house coffee cocktails on the line up.  This includes an Espresso Old Fashioned- a drink I usually order to unwind but this is given a twist with the bitter espresso offsets the sweeter bourbon whisky.

If espresso related drinks are not your thing, we found a number of other non caffeine related gems too.  Being a bit of a cane spirit devotee the hot buttered rum, served in a red coffee mug was my favourite, perfect to warm the chest and took the edge off drinking rum straight. On the bespoke list, my pick is the sugary treat that is the Rhubarbie; tastes like crumble and garnished with a rhubarb and custard sweet. And the best part is all drinks are a very reasonable £7.

As someone that doesn’t drink coffee often, the likes of Starbucks are a lost concept on me.  But what I do know about is a cocktail and fun times; so as long as you’re with good company, Holborn Grind serves both in abundance.
