DoubleTree by Hilton Docklands Launch

If you were affected by the recent London underground strikes, you’ll know that it brought much of London’s roads to a standstill. Luckily, the Thames Clipper boats thrived in the chaos and I was able to arrive at the launch of the DoubleTree by Hilton next to Canary Wharf pier stress free and in style.

Technically this isn’t a launch as the Hilton have long owned the site that was originally built in the 17th Century as a Wharf Building, but following a multimillion pound refurb, has been rebranded as a ‘DoubleTree by Hilton’ to reflect the modernisation. To show off their new lease of life, they held a party bringing in some of their favourite suppliers including Hunters & Frankau cigars, Pommery champagne, and Twinings tea.

Arriving James Bond style on a boat, we are greeted by pyrotechnics, scantily clad stilt walkers, and Havana Club rum punch- which happen to be all of my favourite things. More of my favourite indulgences came in the form of barbequed meat and burgers served on the picturesque outdoor terrace, courtesy of the chefs from Columbia (not the Latin country, it’s the name of the hotel’s in-house restaurant).

Along with the feast, I managed to secure a quick tour of some of the rooms including a suite with an incredible view of the Thames and I came just at the right time to watch the sun fall beyond the horizon.

Located opposite Canary Wharf, the DoubleTree by Hilton Docklands is ideal for business travellers and undoubtedly will be packed with bankers Monday through Thursday. However, as my evening proved, it offers much more than that, and can be equally attractive to tourists or even Londoners in need of a mini break away from the busier parts of town.
