Summary: A welcome addition to the plethora of eateries around Hoxton Square

Taco Heaven

Has anyone else noticed that Mexican inspired cuisine is slowly taking over London?  The likes of Wahaca and Benito’s Hat are quietly popping up in trendy parts of town, and street food fans would likely start a riot if KERB or Street Feast didn’t have at least one taco stand.  Combined with the growing demand for quality tequila in our Margaritas and beer, there is something about Mexican cuisine that’s calling out to us.  And that brings me on to Death By Burrito.  What was once a humble Mexican street food pop up on Shoreditch High Street has ballooned over the past 2 years into a giant of the street food revolution.  They’ve enjoyed residencies at The Candlemaker pub in Battersea, Apartment 58 in Soho, Catch in Shoreditch, and as of last week, a new permanent location within Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen.

Despite having to walk through the main doors of Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, the new DBB is a totally separate entity, as the team has taken over one side of the venue, with their own entrance and a separate bar. Unlike some takeovers I’ve visited, the space is big enough to be classified as a restaurant in its own right and even has a large terrace area for al fresco dining while looking onto Hoxton Square.

If you’ve been to any of the DBB restaurants or street food stalls in the past you should be familiar with the menu; fusion tacos, the famous agave marinated chicken wings, and candied bacon burger all feature.  Having tried the entire DBB menu on several occasions, the pork and kimchi taco still remains a firm favourite of mine.

The cocktail list has been created by DBB consultant, owner of the hugely popular White Lyan bar, and all round Mr Nice Guy Ryan Chetiyawardana.  All use Olmeca tequila, and even if you have just one, order the pyrotechnic A-Gave You My Heart which is basically a Mexican Zombie, switching rum with 4 agave based spirits; delicious and lethal.

You aren’t short of fantastic dining options in Hoxton Square with Byron, Red Dog Saloon, Meat Mission and Dead Doll’s Club all within strides of each other; but Death By Burrito is a welcome addition.  Good value for money, casual, and no one else sells a taco that even comes close.
