Burger Shack @ The Windmill, Clapham
I think it is probably safe to say that the first shoots of summer are beginning to set in. It’s lovely to have to stick your arm out the window just to check it is as warm as the bright sun coming through the window suggests. With warm evenings, there’s now the possibility to enjoy unwinding after a hard day’s work all across the city. Now if you’re struggling for the first idea for such an evening’s fun, you may want to head to The Windmill in Clapham who will be hosting Burger Shack. Through the summer, out of a couple of wonderful mobile huts, Burger Shack will be offering brilliant burgers for you to enjoy with chilled ice cold craft beers. I went to check out the launch on one of the first sun drenched evenings of the season.
Upon arriving, it became obvious that I was walking into a marriage made in heaven. The Windmill is such a statement pub, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Clapham Common greenery and with the refurbished terrace seamlessly nudged up against it. Within the terrace where two colourful and vibrant mobile huts, clad in corrugated iron and decorated with old British artwork and graffiti. I must mention at this point that the line of excited, upbeat and hungry customers was massive, all seemed to not mind and enjoyed the time catching up with friends.
On offer are a choice from four burgers and curly fires, the ‘Chilli Pulled Pork’ which was chilli spiced slow-cooked pulled pork in a soft bun sounded yum, but I went for ‘The Streaky’. Watching the beef patty from West Country farms in Devon, Somerset and Dorset sizzle and smoke as the chef steam fried made my taste buds salivate even more.
Having found a comfy spot with a stunning view, I could finally tuck into my burger. The Streaky is a wonderfully moist beef patty topped with cheese, Dingley Dell streaky maple bacon, Young’s ale onions and pickles in a soft buttery brioche bun with ketchup and mayonnaise. Everything within the bun complimented the fabulous taste of the patty. The beef really shines with each component giving you exactly what you want from a juicy summer time burger. The salty sweet of that bacon combines with the juicy grilled patty but is then balanced with the acidity from the ale onion and pickle.
On weekends, banish hangovers and leap out of bed for a brunch burger. Served from 10am, the wild boar burger is topped with fried egg, streaky bacon and cheese and will get you back on top form in no time, ready for your run around the Common.
I’m only going to whisper this but I’m hearing that the weather is set to be good this summer and the more occasions we have to get down to places like The Windmill with great food and, most importantly, great friends, the better.
