Après London, Mayfair
Summary: If your big night outs often start with the phrase “OK, just one drink”, then Après London is a good place to start
Just The One...
Located next to Selfridges just off Oxford Street, it is dangerously convenient to walk into Après London after a day’s retail therapy for an evening of live music, cocktails, or even smoke a shisha pipe on the ground level terrace on the corner of Duke and Barrett Street. It styles itself as a modern party bar for those looking to let their hair down.
The dimly lit room is brought to life by Banksy-esq murals including one from my favourite scene in Pulp Fiction. The perimeter is littered with tables for couples and small groups to convene- and if you get there before the post dinner/shopping crowd, you may be lucky enough to get a space. Also, for late night socialising, there is a spacious basement lounge, which has a DJ spinning tunes till 2am on Friday and Saturdays.
The cocktail menu is huge, spanning 12 pages of the booklet handed to me upon taking my seat. I have a quick flick through, but my head is left spinning by the names and ingredient lists, so I give up and ask the friendly host for something popular on the menu. Most of the drinks are designed to be made fast and furiously to prevent large queues at the bar. I’m brought the Tall, Dark & Handsome made with gin, blackberry puree, and passion fruit; which I’m told is popular with the male clientele. Fruity and easy to drink in the summer, I can see why it’s so well-liked- that and it’s only £5 during happy hour (£8.50 normally).
My second drink was the Buccaneer; an interesting twist on a Dark & Stormy (Dark Rum & Ginger Beer), with the addition of Sailor Jerry spiced rum and pimento. The combination of spices created an even more refreshing beverage and I let out a satisfying “ahhh”.
The thing I like about Après is that it doesn’t pretend to be a chemistry lab-cum-cocktail bar. There’s no elaborate display of trickery or journeys of discover across the Himalayas to find the perfect ingredients; just simple serves with plenty of ready made juices to boot. To borrow a phrase from a certain wood stain, ‘it does exactly what it says on the tin’. Being located right next to Selfridges and serving plenty of lady friendly drinks make it the perfect hangout for young women- and an equally attractive prospect for guys wanting the company of young women (a Lamborghini was parked outside while I was there). If your big night outs often start with the phrase “OK, just one drink”, then Après London is a good place to start.
